Составной индекс, охватывающий движение цен на все обыкновенные акции, зарегистрированные на Нью-Йоркской фондовой бирже. Его базой является совокупность показателей на время закрытия биржи 31 декабря 1965 г.; база равна 50,00. Индекс взвешен в соответствии с числом акций, зарегистрированных для каждого выпуска. Он рассчитывается постоянно и печатается на ленте биржевого аппарата, передающего котировки ценных бумаг, каждые полчаса. Изменения индекса в пунктах переводятся в доллары и центы для создания понятного средства измерения изменений средних котировок акций, зарегистрированных на бирже.
